The lakes of Medoc
A bit of
history
Pauillac is a town situated on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary, 50 km north of Bordeaux at the heart of the Medoc. The town is renowned for its prestigious historical vineyards. Thanks to its riverside location, ideal for commerce, Pauillac grew significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly through the installation of major industries. In the past, the town was also the departure point for huge transatlantic liners headed to South America. Nowadays, Pauillac is a dynamic, quiet, relaxing and welcoming town where life is good.
Respect for the environment is one of our priorities
And this is why we do everything we can to reduce the impact of our activity on animal and plant life.
The Médoc Lakes: Relaxation and Water Sports in Freshwater
Just a few kilometers from Pauillac, the Médoc lakes offer a peaceful alternative to the Atlantic Ocean. These vast expanses of freshwater, nestled between pine forests and sand dunes, provide an ideal playground for families, sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers. The Best Western Premier – Hôtel Des Vignes et Des Anges is the perfect starting point to discover these natural gems of the Médoc.
The Great Médoc Lakes: Preserved Natural Expanses
The Médoc is home to several natural freshwater lakes that stretch parallel to the Atlantic coast. Separated from the ocean by a strip of land only a few kilometers wide, these bodies of water offer ideal conditions for family swimming and water sports in a safe and soothing environment.
The Hourtin-Carcans Lake: The Largest Natural Lake in France
With its surface area of 56 km² and a length of 18 kilometers, the Hourtin-Carcans lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in France. Located about 35 kilometers from Pauillac, it is a prime destination for a relaxing day with family or friends.
An Exceptional Natural Setting
The lake is bordered by fine sand beaches shaded by maritime pine trees. The calm and shallow waters near the shore make it a safe swimming spot, particularly appreciated by families with young children. The water temperature, milder than the ocean’s, allows for comfortable swimming starting in the spring.
Developed Beaches
Several supervised beaches are set up all around the lake, including Maubuisson, Bombannes, and Le Contaut, each offering its own amenities (picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, restrooms, and parking lots). Lifeguard stations ensure the safety of swimmers during the summer season.
The Lacanau Lake: Charm and Conviviality
Smaller but equally charming, the Lacanau lake extends over 20 km² between the town of Lacanau and the ocean. Located about 40 kilometers from Pauillac, this lake offers a warm, family-friendly atmosphere.
A Laid-Back Vibe
The shores of the Lacanau lake feature shaded beaches, pontoons, and designated swimming zones. The atmosphere is relaxed and perfect for sharing quality time with family. Lakeside restaurants and guinguettes (open-air cafes) offer meals right with your feet in the sand.
Accessibility
The Lacanau lake is easily accessible from Pauillac and offers numerous parking options close to the beaches. Cycle paths allow you to ride all the way around the lake and reach the ocean in just a few minutes.
Water Sports: A Boardsports Paradise
The Médoc lakes are renowned for their ideal conditions for a wide variety of water sports. The calm waters and regular winds create an exceptional playground for all skill levels.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Canoeing/Kayaking
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
This activity enjoys growing popularity on the Médoc lakes. Accessible to everyone, it allows you to explore the lake at your own pace, glide along the wild shores, and observe nature from the water. Numerous rental shops offer boards for all levels, as well as guided sunset excursions.
Canoeing/Kayaking
Perfect for outings with family or friends. Paddle peacefully along the wooded banks, explore hidden coves, and enjoy the stillness of the lakes via signposted routes highlighting the most beautiful vistas.
Sailing and Windsurfing
Sailing
The lakes offer optimal conditions for learning and practicing sailing. Several nautical clubs offer lessons for all ages: optimists for children, as well as catamarans and dinghies for adults. Regular winds and protected waters allow you to sail in total safety.
Windsurfing
Windsurfers particularly appreciate the Hourtin-Carcans lake for its varied sailing conditions. Beginners and experts alike will find their ideal spot depending on the lake zone and wind intensity.
Thrill-Seeking Activities: Wakeboarding and Water Skiing
For thrill-seekers, several nautical bases offer towed water sports:
Wakeboarding
Glide over the water towed by a boat and perform spectacular tricks. Water-ski cable parks (cableski) are also available to practice wakeboarding continuously on designed courses.
Water Skiing
The calm waters, wide-open spaces, and fully equipped bases provide perfect conditions. Certified instructors offer introductory lessons and advanced courses.
Kitesurfing
In designated areas of the Hourtin-Carcans lake, kitesurfing can be practiced under excellent conditions. The vast stretches of water facilitate rapid progress.
Pedal Boats and Family Activities
Pedal Boats (Pédalos)
A fun and universally accessible activity that remains a staple of the Médoc lakes. It is perfect for a family excursion to explore the environment at a leisurely pace.
Water Parks (Splashparks)
Some beaches feature inflatable water structures that delight children and teenagers. Slides, trampolines, and water obstacle courses guarantee hours of entertainment.
Walks and Hikes Around the Lakes
Beyond water sports, the Médoc lakes offer wonderful opportunities for walking and natural discoveries.
Hiking Trails
Signposted trails allow you to loop around the lakes on foot or by bike. These routes cross the pine forest, border wild shores, and offer beautiful panoramic views of the water. It takes about 2 to 3 hours for a complete loop around the Lacanau lake, and a bit longer for the Hourtin-Carcans lake.
Cycle Paths
The Médoc lakes are linked by a network of secure cycle paths. You can easily reach the ocean from the lakes by taking shaded greenways that cut through the forest.
Picnic Areas and Playgrounds
Numerous developed areas allow you to have lunch in the shade of the pines. The main beaches feature swings, slides, and climbing structures for children.
Nature Observation
The shores harbor a rich variety of fauna and flora. Waterbirds (herons, grebes, ducks), dragonflies, and European pond turtles can be spotted from the banks, accompanied by educational panels explaining the lake ecosystem.
